The Indians have started their three month long campaign with a comprehensive victory against the Ireland team. The victory might have come against a team that did not look same as the team that created ripples in the cricket arena during the world cup. Nevertheless, a victory is victory. This will at least set the Indians on the right foot for the bigger matches against the South Africans and the English.
It is unfortunate that Dhoni could not start off his vice-captaincy tenure, due to an unknown injury. Zaheer Khan was also not available. But, that did not upset the Indians plan to score a convincing victory.
India elected to field first and all their bowlers did not disappoint. Piyush Chawla and Sree Santh picked three wickets each to restrict the opponents to 193 all out. Tendulkar and Ganguly shared the fifth bowler's duties. The Indians reached the revised target (171 from 39 overs) with 25 balls remaining. The man of the match Gambhir and opener Ganguly put on 162 runs without being separated. Tendulkar, opening after a long time, did not flourish to the disappointment of his fans.
Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut, but did not get a chance to show his skills.
Next match to look for: 26 June 2007, 1st ODI between India and South Africa.
