Sachin misses century No. 42 by a single

India vs South Africa, Future Cup 2007 - 1st ODI
Date: 26 Jun 2007

Sachin missed a chance to add to his century tally by a single run. He was run out at 99, after playing a good solid innings after a very long time. Even though the Indians could not win the match, Sachin should feel satisfied at his own performance. If Sachin can come out with few more good knocks in this series, then that would lay an ideal platform for him to bid farewell to a great career.

His 158-run partnership with skipper Rahul Dravid laid the foundation for an assault later on the innings. But, the Indians lost the plot in the final 10 overs. With 8 wickets in hand at the start of the 41st over, the Indians managed just 61 runs for the loss of six wickets. The Indians dearly missed an attacking player like Dhoni. His wicket-keeping replacement Karthik did score 19 runs from just 10 deliveries, but in the end that was not sufficient.

If the Indians lost in the final 10 overs of their innings, the South Africans gained in their first 10 overs. A good spinning combination from Piyush Chawla and Ramesh Powar brought the match to the final over. But, the super-good Kallis is around there to guide his team to victory with three deliveries to spare.

Result: South Africa 245/6 (Kallis 91 not out) in 49.3 overs beat India 242/8 (Sachin 99, Dravid 74) in 50 overs. Kallis was declared the man of the match.

Next match to look far: 29 June 2007, 2nd ODI between India and South Africa.
