Dhoni in Test match #18

India vs England, India in England, Pataudi Trophy Test Series (2007) - 1st Test
Date: 19-23 July 2007

Day 1 (19 July 2007):

The Indian skipper lost the toss and the Indian team lost the plot. Initially, when the match started, I had my doubts whether this is a test match or a Twenty20 match. The England openers amassed 40 runs in the first five overs. By the time the first wicket fell in the 15th over, already 76 runs were on the board.

The first wicket was claimed, surprisingly, by Ganguly. Then a steady partnership of 142 runs was raised by Strauss and Vaughan. When all seems to have lost for the Indians, Strauss left for 96 runs. Then a break came due to fading light. The Indians came back when play resumed and took more two wickets.

The Indian bowling is wayward in the morning. Dhoni had to run hard like an athlete to collect a wide delivery from Sree Santh just in front of the second slip.

The final score for the day read 268/4 (Strauss 96, Vaughan 79). Kumble picked two wickets while RP Singh and Ganguly claimed one each. Dhoni took a catch to dismiss Vaughan
