Day 2 (28 July 2007): India takes a decisive lead
The Indian batsmen ensured that their bowlers efforts are not wasted. By the end of the day, the Indians have taken a strong position in this match. If their batting line-up fires one more day, then they will be in a better position to take the lead in this intensely fought test series so far.
In the morning, Zaheer Khan and Kumble claimed the last three England wickets for the addition of another 29 runs. With the score under 200 runs, the onus was on the Indian openers to lay a platform for building a big lead. The openers did not disappoint. Karthik and Jaffer produced a 147-run first wicket partnership that led the Indian reply.
Once the openers were dismissed, the two senior batsmen Dravid and Tendulkar forged a 97-run partnership that helped India to take the lead. The day saw Tendulkar, Karthik and Jaffer post half-centuries. Dravid was out when the play is almost nearing the end of the day.
1st innings:
England 198 (Cook 43, Zaheer 4 for 59, Kumble 3 for 32)
India 254/3 (Karthik 77, Jaffer 62, Sachin 57 not out)
