There are not too many surprises in both the teams, in spite of the promises made by the BCCI after the World cup debacle. Manoj Tiwary and Rajesh Pawar are the two new faces while players like Mongia, Gambhir R P Singh and Ramesh Powar makes a comeback. It is disappointing to note that a bowler like Ranadeb Bose, who promised so much just before the World cup, cannot find a place in this team.
The only major/ bold decision made by the selectors is to drop Sachin and Ganguly for the ODI series and Harbhajan from both teams. Ironically, Virender Sehwag retains his place in the ODI squad. Dilip Vengsarkar, the chairman of selectors, clarified that Sachin and Ganguly had been “rested” while Harbhajan, Agarkar and Pathan had been “dropped”.
Interestingly, no vice-captain was named for the ODI squad as well as the test squad. This clearly shows the inability of the selectors to make decisions. A vice-captain is a captain in making and the selectors should have a clear idea on whom they want to groom as the next captain. Dravid was an ideal second-in-command to Ganguly for many years before he took the leadership.
I could not comprehend the decision by the selectors not to have two specialist openers for the test series. Dinesh Karthik has been selected as an opener along with Wasim Jaffer. This is really a short-sighted approach and would backfire very soon. Why the selectors were unable to select a regular opener? Since the hype over the World cup is over, it is time for the selectors to start building the right team for the future.
I am sure that the Indians will come out as winners at the end of the series, but the selectors had missed a golden opportunity to set the right path even after the World cup debacle.
