Dhoni played a great controlled innings. Walking in at a precarious position of 94-4, he paved the way for the victory with a 133 run partnership with skipper Rahul Dravid. Dravid achieved a personal milestone during the course of his 66, becoming only the sixth batsman to cross 10000 ODI runs.

Sri Lanka won by 5 runs and lead the 4-match series 1-0.

Dhoni played a good innings, but ran out of partners in the end. He is unable to force the pace in the last 5 overs and was eventually dismissed in the penultimate delivery. After being down and out at 169-5, India came back strongly through a 66-run partnership between Dhoni and Karthik. But once Karthik was out, the tailenders were unable to rotate the strike as Dhoni would have liked.
